The nonfungible token (NFT) platform OpenSea has recently found itself at the center of controversy following accusations made on social media. An anonymous account known as NFT Ethics tagged OpenSea in a thread on X (formerly Twitter), asking for a response to allegations regarding the company’s former head of ventures, Kevin Pawlak. The accusations claim that Pawlak, under the pseudonymous identity “0xSisyphus,” played a significant role in the infamous AnubisDAO rug pull.
Allegations of Dubious Business Dealings
NFT Ethics and the blockchain analytics account Lookonchain have highlighted Pawlak’s alleged involvement in hyping the AnubisDAO project to investors before transferring the raised funds to external wallets. The thread by NFT Ethics suggests that Pawlak collaborated with other developers to premeditate the rug pull and then laundered the proceeds through the memecoin Pepe (PEPE).
However, OpenSea has responded by stating that it is unaware of Pawlak’s involvement in any such activities. A spokesperson for the company clarified that Pawlak had a limited scope while working at OpenSea and that they have no knowledge of his connection to the projects in question. The spokesperson also emphasized that the alleged incidents occurred prior to Pawlak’s time at the company.
AnubisDAO, the project at the center of the accusations, raised a substantial amount of funds from crypto investors in October 2021. However, within 20 hours, the funds were transferred to multiple wallet addresses, resulting in significant losses for the investors. The rug pull incident led to widespread scrutiny and a search for those responsible.
While NFT Ethics and Lookonchain have presented their allegations, blockchain sleuth ZachXBT has expressed skepticism. He referred to the thread as “mid-curve” and criticized the assumptions made about 0xSisyphus’ involvement without concrete evidence. He also highlighted that 0xSisyphus had offered a bounty for identifying the wallet address involved in draining the pool, suggesting a genuine effort to address the situation.
ZachXBT made a clear distinction between negligence and intentionally stealing funds from one’s own project. He acknowledged that Sisyphus was in contact with the Department of Homeland Security and questioned whether they would not have monitored his activities closely. ZachXBT indicated that while Sisyphus may be at fault for negligence and lying about the Anubis team multisig, direct involvement in stealing funds remains unproven.
