The Vatican Library has announced a groundbreaking project aimed at expanding its digital reach through the use of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and Web3 technology. In a move that signals a new era of engagement with supporters, the library is granting non-transferable NFTs to backers of its manuscript collections. This initiative, currently in the experimental phase, is open exclusively to Italian supporters of the Vatican Apostolic Library.
The project offers Italian backers the opportunity to earn a “Silver NFT” by sharing the NFT project on social media until July 16. This will grant them access to a selection of 15 manuscripts in high-resolution images. Those who choose to financially support the project will receive a “Gold NFT” and gain access to high-resolution images of all 21 manuscripts in the special collection. This innovative endeavour represents a significant step forward in the Vatican Library’s ongoing efforts to enhance public access to its priceless artefacts.
To facilitate this ambitious project, the Vatican Library has partnered with NTT DATA, a prominent Japanese technology company known for its expertise in driving digital innovation. Together, they aim to leverage Web3 advancements to connect with supporters and broaden the library’s digital reach. NTT DATA’s commitment to investing $4 billion in Web3 infrastructure underscores the company’s dedication to advancing cutting-edge technological solutions.
The Vatican Library, with its rich history dating back to the 4th century, is situated within Vatican City in a structure that has stood since the late 1500s. In 2020, the library unveiled a modernized website with improved search functionalities and simplified access to digitized treasures.
